Mid-Summer Garden Boost: Quick Wins for the Longest Days

All

With the summer solstice here, we’ve officially reached the longest days of the year – and that means more time to enjoy (and tend to) your garden. If you've already ticked off the early-season jobs, now's the time for a quick refresh to keep your outdoor space looking its best as we head into peak summer.

Here are some simple but effective mid-season jobs you can tackle this weekend or during an evening potter in the garden.

1. Feed and water smart

Longer, warmer days can quickly sap moisture and nutrients from your plants and lawn. Keep everything thriving with a targeted feed – a high nitrogen fertiliser like our bestselling A1 Lawn Ultimate Spring Summer Fertiliser will help lawns stay lush, while our Amvista Arbor Gold Fertiliser will keep borders and pots blooming.

Water early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler, to reduce evaporation and give plants the best chance to soak it up.

2. Patch things up

Sun, pets and garden footfall can all take their toll on lawns and beds by now. Fill bare spots on the lawn with a fast-growing grass seed, and rake in some fresh compost or mulch to revive tired flower beds and pots. It's a great time for a mid-season top-up.

3. Deadhead and tidy

Regular deadheading will encourage more flowers to bloom, and it's a quick job you can do in 10 minutes after dinner. Trim back any overgrown plants or wayward stems, and keep patios or gravel areas free of weeds and debris. Want to spend a bit more time getting your outside sparkling? 4. Make the most of the light

With the sun hanging around well into the evening, it’s the perfect time to get outside after work. Light-touch tasks like watering, weeding or harvesting herbs make for a relaxing, productive wind-down – and you’ll head into July with a garden in great shape.

5. Get ahead for next month

July brings more heat, more growth and more pests. Keep an eye out for signs of stress or disease, especially in lawns and edible plants. It's also a good time to plan any shade solutions or watering systems for the hotter weeks ahead.

Bonus tip: keep your kit in shape

Give tools a quick clean and check before your next session – a sharp blade or clean watering can makes the job much easier.
