Spring: A Guide To Looking After Your Lawn

All

It is a great feeling when flowers start to bloom and your grass becomes active again, it reminds us that summer is on its way and spring is finally here. With the weather hopefully warming up it’s time to think about focusing on lawn care maintenance.

Patch Repair, Overseeding & Sowing A New Lawn

Spring is normally a great time to sow grass seed. The weather becomes mild and warm enough for seed to germinate followed by the Spring showers. A great benefit to sowing at this time of the year is that you will have a fully established lawn by summer to enjoy your hard work when those heat waves come along.

Please always check your local forecast before sowing seed. Temperatures need to be consistently above 8 – 10 degrees with no snow or frost forecast before you can confidently sow and expect great results, always check 2 weeks in advance.

Once we have the temperatures needed for seeding please refer to our guides below to reflect the work you are carrying out, weather that be patch repairs, over-seeding or sowing a new lawn. Whichever it is, we have you covered.

Fertiliser

Feeding your lawn is crucial for grass health and disease resistance. Normally after Winter your lawn may not be in the best shape. Whether you are sowing or just giving the lawn a boost with fertiliser, we have the products for you. There are three main chemicals that work in different ways (NPK).

  • Nitrogen (N) - Accelerates top end growth by stimulating the grass leaf and providing a lush green colour.
  • Phosphate (P) - The most important chemical when sowing new seed, encourages root growth to get better establishment along with stronger and thicker roots.

  • Potassium (K) - Provides protection and tolerance to diseases and drought and will also make the grass hardier.

If you are doing any type of seeding whether that be sowing a new lawn, over-seeding an existing lawn or patch repairs, then consider our A1Lawn Pre-Seeder Fertiliser (6-9-6)

If you need to remove moss or treat weeds and feed the lawn, then could consider our – A1Lawn Lawn Weed, Feed & Moss Killer (Double Strength) (10-2-2)

If your lawn needs a rapid boost after Winter? Needs greening and thickening? Then A1Lawn Ultimate Spring/Summer Lawn Fertiliser (10-4-4) is the perfect fertiliser for you

Watering

Water is the key to success when it comes to seeding either a new lawn or over-seeding an existing lawn, if no rain or water is prominent, it simply won’t grow. It is vital to keep the area well moist during the first 4-6 weeks after Appling the seeds to the area.

In times of drought try to water the area 2-3 times a day, a great tip is to water when the sun goes down as this allows the area to hold moisture through the night. If no seeding is required but a drought is causing issues such as yellow or dry patch, try and water intermittently or apply our wetting agent – Abzorb Triple Action.

Wetting Agent Abzorb is an excellent wetting agent made up of surfactants with a very low environmental impact. Abzorb assists the penetration of water in dry areas for medium to long term re-wetting. This fast-acting product attaches itself to the waxes and lipids left by fungal spores on soil and sand particles which will in turn attract water molecules allowing hydrophobic areas to be re-wet. Abzorb contains a special blend of soil penetrating surfactants that will help to re-wet dry areas of turf affected by dry patches and fairy ring.
