Preparing Your Garden For Summer

All

It's time to start preparing your garden for summer! Now is the perfect time to plant grass seed and those much-needed beautiful plants. We have put together this blog with as much information as you will need, to have that perfectly green lawn. Get prepared to enjoy your garden this coming season.

IT'S TIME TO LOVE YOUR LAWN

Here we are going to give you a step-by-step guide to prepare your soil ready for grass seed.

  • Level your planting area as much as possible.
  • Till your soil between 3-6 inches, this will help your soil to be lump free and loose.

  • If your area of planting is already quite even, then we would leave the tilling process, as this can bring on weed growth.

  • Now that your soil is prepped, it's time to plant your seed of choice.

  • We have many types of grass seeds so please look through to see which suits your needs best. If you have children and pets we highly recommend Am-Pro 26 multi purpose grass seed, it's hard wearing and will retain its fine appearance whilst your children and pets enjoy the sunshine! If your garden lacks sunshine, A1 Lawn has you covered with our AM-Pro 9 shade and drought grass seed, perfect for the shadiest of gardens, tried and tested!

  • Apply the plant seed at the recommended rate, You can find this information on your product. For the Am-Pro 26 multi purpose grass seed and Am-Pro 9 shade and drought grass seed this covers Approx. coverage for sowing new lawn: 5kg = 140 m2.

  • When you're scattering your plant seed make sure you are doing this evenly, whilst ensuring you're not missing any area.

If you have poor soil in your garden, we recommend applying a light sprinkle of fertiliser. We have a wide range of fertilisers, we would highly recommend using Our A1Lawn Ultimate Pre-Seeder which is perfect for newly sown areas or our A1Lawn Ultimate Spring/Summer for the upcoming months. Watering your newly seeded lawn is a must. If there has been no rainfall, we highly advise watering the area twice daily - once in the morning and once in the early evening. Just enough to make the top of the soil moist. If you let the seeds dry out, they will die. Mowing your lawn is essential but you must wait until it reaches a height of at least 8-9cm, this could take a couple of weeks to a matter of months. It all depends on your garden and soil, remember to mow gently for the first 3-4 times, as the roots are still growing.  If you are unsure or have any questions, you can find our contact details here.

REMOVE WEEDS AND FOLIAGE

We think it's fair to say we all dislike this job, but it’s a job that needs doing and will definitely be rewarding at the end. Pull out any weeds that are in the cracks of your slabs, between your decking and in your lawn. To help prevent weeds coming back we recommend using weed killer, we have the ultimate choice when it comes to weed killer, click here to see our full range.

CLEAN YOUR PATIOS

At this time of year everyone starts to get out their jet washers, ready to blast away the dirt that’s built up over the winter months on their patios and decking! Here at A1 Lawn we understand time is precious, we have found a solution that will spare up your time so you can do other things you love. MAC Hi Power our hard surface cleaner, is most effective at treating mould, algae and grime on all hard surfaces. Our MMC-Pro is a broad-spectrum anti-viral and antibacterial disinfectant, fungicide/algaecide and cationic detergent. Superb at dealing with algae growth on hard surfaces where glyphosate weed killer just won't work. Make sure to read the instructions on the labels before use, to get the best results.

PLANT FLOWERS

Who loves to walk out into the garden to see a variety of beautiful flowers and some honeybees flying around? We do at A1 Lawn. We have a great selection of wildflowers which can be seen here, now is the perfect time to scatter those seeds. All you need to do is:
  • Sow in the spring or early summer - lightly rake the soil and spread the mix.
  • Firm the soil and water well, by doing this you will be creating a year round habitat for bees and pollinators.
We hope this blog has given you all the information you need, to help you prepare your garden just in time for summer!
